We all have stories to tell about our families, our jobs, our accomplishments, our dreams and more. Students in Goodwin College’s Level IV ESL program create Memory Quilts—paper squares decorated with drawings, photographs, magazine pictures, stickers, etc.—to represent moments and ideas in their lives. As students work on their separate projects, they talk and share their stories, gaining a stronger ability to understand and use English. They connect the individual squares together into one large piece like the old, hand-sewn quilts passed down from generation to generation. Upon completion, each student speaks to all the Goodwin College ESL students about his or her Memory Quilt, resulting in questions, discussion, laughter and even tears. Students are often surprised by how easily their words come out, how smooth their sentences are and how musical their voices become as they talk about their lives using their new language.
