Business Studies
With a degree in Business a graduate will have the skills to solve problems, make decisions, work with others, use technology, and manage themselves to ensure both entrance into the workforce as well as to help them advance professionally. Students pursuing a Business Studies degree may choose to concentrate in Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, International Business, Human Resource Management, Professional Sales & Service, Office Administration, or Medical Office Administration.

 

Job Prospects*

• The number of jobs in Business Administration is projected to grow as fast as average.
• Employment of Office Administrative Assistants is expected to grow about as fast as average.
• Employment within human resources is expected to grow faster than the average and college graduates who have earned certification should have the best job opportunities.

Early Childhood Education
A degree in Early Childhood Education provides you with the skills and training necessary for professional positions in child development, curriculum planning, classroom assessment, education, and many more!

Job Prospects*

• Child care workers are expected to experience job growth that is faster than the average for all occupations
• Employment of preschool, kindergarten, and elementary teachers is projected to grow about as fast as average.

Homeland Security
People who work in homeland security anticipate, prepare for, prevent, and react to everything from pandemics to hurricanes to terrorism. These workers help to reduce our Nation’s vulnerabilities and to minimize the damage from catastrophic events. As a Homeland Security employee, you can help secure our borders, airports, seaports and waterways; research and develop the latest security technologies; respond to natural disasters or terrorists assaults; and analyze intelligence reports. Homeland Security careers include: Immigration Officer; Border Patrol Agent; Corrections Officers; Intelligence Operations Specialist; Transportation Security Screener; Police Officer; Import Specialist; Security for Private Corporations; and many more!

Job Prospects*

• Employment of Immigration Officers, Border Patrol Agents, Customs Agents, as well as police and detectives is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations. A more security-conscious society and population growth will contribute to the increasing demand for police services.

• Employment of correctional officers is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations

Human Services
The Human Services field has a broad range of opportunities, including working with people to meet basic human needs, addressing quality of life issues and promoting human growth and development. Students pursuing a Human Services degree may choose to focus their studies on Gerontology, Youth Development, Nonprofit Management, or be a Human Services Generalist. Human Services careers and activities include: child protective services; youth development; educational support services; services for people with special physical and developmental needs; mental health services; counseling; case management services; emergency and disaster services; recreational services; assisted living centers; retirement communities; child or senior advocacy organizations; and many more!

Job Prospects*

• Job Prospects are expected to be excellent for social and human service assistants, particularly for applicants with appropriate postsecondary education, with growth that is expected to be much faster than the average.
• Employment for social workers is expected to grow much faster than the average particularly for social workers who specialize in the aging population or work in rural areas.
• Employment of managers is projected to have little or no change however managers are essential to the success of any organization and their jobs are unlikely to be automated or off shored to other countries.

Health Science
Students who complete an Associate Degree in Health Science can gain entry level positions in medical offices, hospitals, long-term care facilities, and other health care agencies. Some students who are currently working in health care use the degree to obtain higher level positions with their current employer. Students can also go on to complete a four-year degree at a college or university.

Histology
Histotechnicians prepare microscopic slides of tissue which are delicate and require skill, understanding and patience. Professionals trained in Histotechnology work in a laboratory setting preparing samples of tissue to be used for diagnosing diseases, medical research and even training medical personnel. Some examples of where there are Histology employment opportunities include working in a hospital’s anatomic pathology laboratory; research labs; veterinarian labs; MOH’s surgery; private labs; the medical examiners office; pharmaceutical companies; marine biology labs; in botany; the Centers for Disease Control; and many more!

• Rapid job growth and excellent job opportunities are expected available for Histotechnicians with faster than average growth. Positions are open in all areas of the country with more job openings in the field of histotechnology than there are trained people to fill them.

Medical Assisting
Certified Medical Assistants are multi-skilled practitioners who assume a wide range of roles in physicians’ offices and other health care settings and are viewed by physicians as vital partners in the health care system. Medical Assistants will perform both administrative and clinical duties such as: charting and filing patients’ medical records; handling billing and bookkeeping; arranging for hospital admissions/laboratory services; recording vital signs; preparing and assisting with patient exams; collecting and preparing laboratory specimens; and many more!

Job Prospects*

• Employment for medical assistants is projected to grow much faster than average, ranking medical assistants among the fastest growing occupations over the 2006 - 2016 decade.

Nursing
An Associate Degree in Nursing will provide the class work and clinical practice necessary to ensure that graduates can function effectively in today’s healthcare industry. The program focuses on the process of nursing, promotes critical thinking, fosters the development of moral and ethical professional behaviors, and promotes continued self-development and personal and professional growth.

Job Prospects*

• Overall job opportunities for registered nurses are expected to be excellent and are expected to grow much faster than the average. Because the occupation is very large, many new jobs will result. In fact, registered nurses are projected to generate 587,000 new jobs, among the largest number of new jobs for any occupation.

Respiratory Care
Respiratory Therapists are trained to work with adult and pediatric patients including premature infants with cardio-pulmonary disorders. They perform procedures that are diagnostic and therapeutic such as: administering medication in aerosol form to help relieve breathlessness; obtaining and analyzing blood and sputum specimens; using ventilators; performing diagnostic tests for patients with sleep disorders; etc. Respiratory Therapist job opportunities can be found in many settings including: acute care hospitals; rehabilitation and long term care facilities; pulmonary function labs; physician offices; pharmaceutical companies; Life Star air ambulance; and many more!

Paramedic
By enrolling and completing the Paramedic certificate program a student will be prepared to sit for licensure as a paramedic in the state of Connecticut. The student will learn to evaluate a patient’s condition and apply life-saving care. As a graduate one can find employment with fire departments; private ambulance services; police departments; aeromedical care; hospitals; and many more!

Phlebotomy
Phlebotomists are skilled health professionals who specialize in the collection, processing, and laboratory testing of blood specimens. Recipients of the phlebotomy certificate will develop both the communication skills and familiarity with anatomy and physiology needed to become professionals in their field.

Medical Billing and Coding
Those pursuing a degree in medical billing and coding will be equipped with the skills necessary to perform a range of activities including submitting claims to insurance companies, state insurance agencies or the U.S. government; resolve discrepancies when claims are denied; navigate and utilize a classification system to assign codes for all patient symptoms, diagnosis’s, diseases, procedures, etc. that are used in insurance reimbursement and research; and many more! Upon completion of the AS students will be prepared to sit for the Certified Professional Coder exam.

Job Prospects*

• Employment is expected to grow faster than average.
• Job prospects should be very good; technicians with a strong background in medical coding will be in particularly high demand.
